Downtown Indiana, PA main street on a crisp early autumn morning

Happy Monday, neighbors!

We have a full, fun week ahead in Indiana County: a lively Third Thursday downtown, farmers market morning, a big craft show at the mall, and family weekend just wrapping up at IUP. The air is getting that early-autumn crispness, and the community calendar is humming.

Here is what I am watching across Indiana County this week.

Happening This Week

Third Thursdays in Downtown Indiana returns Thursday, September 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at IRMC Park, on the corner of 7th and Philadelphia Street.

It is a free monthly street event with live music, local eats, food vendors, and free children's activities, a favorite way to spend a warm evening in the borough.

The Indiana County Farmers' Market is back Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to noon in the S&T Bank parking lot at South 8th and Church Street.

A dozen-plus vendors gather with local produce, flowers, baked goods, meats, eggs, and honey, with live music on special occasions. It is a lovely Saturday morning ritual.

Sally's Bazaar Indoor Vendor and Craft Show fills the Indiana Mall on Saturday, September 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2334 Oakland Avenue.

It is a large vendor and craft show that benefits The Salvation Army, a great spot for early holiday shopping and supporting local makers at once.

Looking Ahead

A couple of dates later this month are worth putting on the calendar now.

  • IUP Career Expo and Business Career Fair, Wednesday, September 23, at IUP, a major opportunity for students and job seekers to meet employers from the region.
  • Indiana County Local Emergency Planning Committee meets Monday, September 28, a regular public meeting for those interested in county emergency preparedness.

Event details can shift, so it is always worth a quick check of the Visit Indiana County PA calendar or the Downtown Indiana PA events page before you head out.

Community News

IUP Family Weekend wrapped up Sunday, September 14, welcoming families to campus for a weekend of activities with the bookstore and University Museum open for visitors.

It is a warm tradition that brings the wider community onto campus each fall.

IUP's College of Osteopathic Medicine signed a clinical training affiliation with Adelphoi Village this month, expanding clinical training opportunities for future osteopathic medical students serving the region.

It is another sign of the university's growing footprint in rural healthcare here in western PA.

IUP marks Constitution Day on Monday, September 14 with a public reading of the Constitution and a program on the Framers.

The 29th Annual Hoodlebug Festival in Homer City wrapped a fun September 12-13 weekend, an America 250-themed celebration with a 5K run and plenty of local food and music.

One county note with an eye on the future: the Indiana County Planning Commission tabled the Amazon data center project and heard public comment on potential data centers at its September meeting, while the county is accepting proposals to update the Indiana County Housing Plan and conduct a land bank feasibility study.

Housing and economic development are clearly front and center in county conversations right now, which is worth watching for anyone who owns or hopes to own property here.

A Quick Real Estate Note

For anyone keeping an eye on the local market, Indiana County remains one of the most affordable places to buy a home in western PA.

Average home values countywide sit around $170,600, up about 7.7 percent year over year, and homes go under contract in about 11 days on average. The 15701 borough ZIP remains the hottest pocket, with average values around $207,100, up about 7.9 percent, and homes there going under contract in roughly a week.

New construction is still very limited across the county, so well-maintained existing homes in good locations continue to move quickly.

If you are weighing a move or an investment in the area, this is a great time to have a conversation about what is actually available.
