What's Happening in Indiana County: Week of October 12, 2026

Red-brick storefronts and golden maples on an October morning in Indiana, PA

Happy Monday, neighbors!

The leaves are peaking across the county, the farmers market is in its final stretch, and there is a full slate of October goodness ahead: the Pumpkin Festival at Reeger's Farm returns for its third weekend, IUP football hosts Slippery Rock on Saturday, and The Armory marks 250 years of music in America on Thursday.

Here is what I am watching across Indiana County this week.

Happening This Week

The Indiana County Farmers' Market gathers Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to noon in the S&T Bank parking lot at South 8th and Church Street.

The 2026 season runs through Halloween, so only a few Saturdays remain: October 17, 24, and 31. Stock up on local produce, flowers, baked goods, meats, eggs, and honey while the season lasts. A crisp October Saturday at the market is one of my favorite ways to start a weekend.

The Pumpkin Festival at Reeger's Farm returns for its third weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 755 Laurel Road in Shelocta.

Admission is free, with a $2 hayride out to the pumpkin patch and corn maze, barnyard animals, children's activities, and food on site. The last hayride leaves at 3:30 p.m., so give yourselves time to wander.

Through the Years: 250 Years of Music takes place Thursday, October 15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Armory, 621 Wayne Avenue, operated by the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County.

It is part of the America250PA Indiana County series celebrating Pennsylvania's place in the nation's 250th anniversary. The event listing notes more information is coming, so peek at the Visit Indiana County PA calendar before you head over.

The Visio Duplex Art Exhibition is in its final days, on view through October 17 at the University Museum at IUP in Sutton Hall on South Drive, featuring local artists Janice Trusky Clay and Beth Yoe Fiddler. If you have not caught it yet, this is the week.

And for the dog lovers: Indiana County's Canine Adventure wraps up Saturday, October 17. The self-guided, dog-friendly photo scavenger hunt takes you to photo locations across the county, with a $40 per person registration (cash only) that includes a hooded sweatshirt and a bandana for your pup.

Then there is the football game of the week: Crimson Hawks football hosts Slippery Rock at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 17, at George P. Miller Stadium. It is a big PSAC West matchup, and after a tough Homecoming result, the Hawks will be glad to be back in front of the home crowd.

Looking Ahead

A few dates in the weeks ahead are worth putting on the calendar now.

  • Evening in the Stacks, the Indiana Free Library's annual fall fundraiser, Friday, October 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 845 Philadelphia Street. This year's theme is "Set Sail," inspired by Homer's The Odyssey.
  • Downtown Indiana Trick-or-Treat, Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to noon at IRMC Park, for the little ghosts and goblins of Indiana.
  • Scary Harry's Haunted Trails, Saturday, October 24, from 7 to 11 p.m. at 1681 Pierce Road in Homer City, for those who like their October a little spookier. Tickets are available online at scaryharrys.com.
  • White Township's curbside leaf collection begins Monday, October 26, so start raking those golden leaves to the curb.

Event details can shift, so it is always worth a quick check of the Visit Indiana County PA calendar or the Downtown Indiana PA events page before you head out.

Community News

IUP suffered its first loss of the season on Homecoming. Lock Haven upset No. 10 IUP 35-20 on Saturday, October 10, at George P. Miller Stadium. It was Lock Haven's first win over IUP since 1981, snapping a 37-game losing streak in the series. The Crimson Hawks now sit at 5-1 overall and 2-1 in PSAC West play as they turn toward Slippery Rock this Saturday.

IUP was selected for the Pennsylvania Hunger-Free Campus+ designation. The recognition highlights the university's work to address food insecurity among students, a meaningful honor for a campus that is so woven into the life of this community.

Indiana Borough is moving forward on the Vinegar Hill stabilization project. Borough council approved a $146,500 contract with Verardi Landscapes for the work, part of the ongoing effort to care for one of the borough's longtime hillside neighborhoods.

An IUP graduate is coming home to practice medicine. Dr. Tia Harne has joined the IRMC Family Medicine Residency Program, adding another local doctor to the county's growing network of care.

A Quick Real Estate Note

The latest market data continues to tell a steady story for Indiana County. Zillow's most recent county figures put the typical home value around $170,600, up about 7.7 percent year over year, with homes going under contract in roughly 11 days.

For the borough of Indiana itself, the typical home value sits around $173,200, up about 2.7 percent over the past year. Looking at the 15701 ZIP code specifically, the typical home value is around $207,100, up about 7.9 percent year over year, with homes going under contract in about 8 days.

With the farmers market in its final weeks and the leaves at their best, this is a lovely time to walk the borough and picture your next chapter here.
