The Tallest Cross in Pennsylvania Is Right Here in Indiana County
Published 2026-09-17 by Sheri Kunkle
Heading west on Route 286, just outside Indiana Borough, you can spot it from miles away: a massive white cross rising above the fields at Hilltop Baptist Church. At 108 feet tall and 70 feet wide, it's the tallest cross in Pennsylvania, and it's right here in Indiana County.
Completed in May 2023 and dedicated on Father's Day, it took about 55,000 pounds of steel and more than half a million pounds of concrete. Volunteers committed thousands of hours to build it, and local crane companies lent a hand along the way.
Pastor Jack Lucas put it simply: "We weren't even looking at the record. We were just looking at sharing hope."
It's a quiet place, too. Benches sit at the base, made for prayer and reflection, and visitors are welcome to pull off the road and see it up close. Travel writers have even added it to the PA Bucket List of must-see Pennsylvania landmarks.
Next time you're heading west on 286, look up. Indiana County is full of surprises, and this one is 108 feet of them.
